IG Field will be home turf for The Monster, billed as the world’s largest inflatable obstacle course, from Friday through Monday. It has been bouncing around the world with its 40 obstacles across a 300-metre course that takes on up to 380 people per hour and 100 at a time.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for youth (7-15) plus fees and taxes and are sold in half-hour blocks, which is about the suggested time required to tackle the course. (A ticketed adult must run the course with the youth.)

The obstacle course is only part of the festivities, with a live DJ in the north end zone and other games and inflatables throughout the concourse. Food and drinks, including alcohol, are available at the Rum Hut. The event kicks over to 18-plus at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the course closed at 10 and the Rum Hut shutting down at 11:30 p.m.

The 134th Islendingadagurinn, the Icelandic festival pronounced just how it looks, does its town takeover in Gimli this weekend with a return to its full slate of events plus a couple of new ones to boot.

Four-time World’s Strongest Man champion Magnus Ver Magnusson hosts a titular strongman competition at the Viking statue on Saturday, with a spot in the MVM Classic in Iceland in November up for grabs, with a chance to qualify for the world event.

Us mere mortals can compete in the Islendingadunk, with two combatants perched on a lubricated pole over the water in the harbour, attempting to knock each other off using a wet sack filled with sponge.

There’s an abundance of other activities including a Viking village, midway rides, beer gardens, a fashion show, workshops, live music options and a Monday parade featuring marshall Kerri Einarson, a world-class curler from the area.

Also on tap this Terry Fox Day weekend:

The dead-of-winter Big Fun Festival, which last appeared in 2019, has been resurrected as the middle-of-summer Big Sun Festival on Saturday at Blue Note Park.

The multi-genre musical event (plus surprises) runs from 4 till late, with the bill including French Class, a DJ set from Jaywood, Howtoboilwater, the Land League, C. Samm, Fold Paper, Booter, and Amos the Kid. Tix are $25 plus fees.

Those of us of a certain vintage are often reminded of our mortality from the death of musicians and celebrities and the timestamp provided by classic albums.

One of the latter, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, hit 50 this year and is being celebrated through a series of sold-out shows at the Planetarium as well as with a live tribute from the UK’s Brit Floyd at the Burt on Saturday. It comes with all kinds of bells and whistles with tickets running in the $60-120 range.

A screening of satirical comedy But I’m A Cheerleader, which harpoons the notion of homosexual conversion therapy, is the centrepiece of a tribute show Friday at the Good Will Social Club.

Poodle Paddle performs the soundtrack live during the 1999 film, with a live drag show and more live music scheduled. Tix are $13 in advance or five bucks more at the door.

Bear Grease puts an Indigenous spin on the 1978 musical at the Pyramid Cabaret on Friday and Saturday … RugbyMania at Maple Grove Rugby Park this Saturday and Sunday features some solid 7’s action plus a pub crawl Saturday and Sunday social.
